I would like to know if there is something I can do to get this to work. So the problem manifests specifically with older 8.5 projects opened in 9.5. If I attempt to transfer some new audio into a new Melodyne plugin instance then there is no problem - it transfers and plays back correctly. The plugin can still see the transferred audio files, and I have not moved them or altered them. I can play audio on that track, but not from within Melodyne.

The older ones don’t have the active modify button, just a gray one. The newer ones have both an active Modify button along with the Uninstall button. In the list of installed Apps I found all the Microsoft Visual C++ Distributables.

I tried to inactivate and uninstall the Waves plugins and Waves Central and reinstall but like everyone else it did not work.     I’ll just replace their buggy crap with Plugin Alliance stuff that actually works & dont squeeze you for paid compatibility updates a grand down the tubes on Waves plugs, unless i pay over £200 for WUP? no thanks!
